Naver Webtoon Corp., the digital comics and novel platform of South Korea’s online portal giant Naver Corp., has agreed to set up a joint venture with Japan’s television broadcaster TBS to foster original intellectual property.

Naver Webtoon said on Monday it will establish the JV dubbed Studio TooN in South Korea later this month with TBS and a Japanese webtoon producer SHINE Partners.

Studio TooN plans to create original webtoons and videos through a combination of Naver Webtoon’s global services and networks, SHINE’s webtoon production know-how, as well as TBS’ capabilities to turn content into video products.

“Through the foundation of the JV, we will provide various interesting content in cooperation with TBS, which has excellent production capacities, ” said Naver Webtoon CEO Kim Jun-koo.

Naver Webtoon To Form Jv With Japan's Tbs For Original Ip

TBS is one of the major broadcasters in Japan, producing a wide range of programs such as news, dramas, entertainment shows, sports and animated content. Studio TooN is TBS’ first JV in South Korea.

The Japanese broadcaster is poised to produce and air videos based on original webtoons created by the JV, while Naver Webtoon is set to distribute those digital comics through its global networks. In addition, the South Korean company aims to foster the IP business through cooperation in the content sector with TBS.

“Webtoons are in the spotlight as core original IP in Japan as interest grows in creating videos based on webtoons, ” said a Naver Webtoon source.

Foreign Viewers Of Naver's Webtoons Outnumber Koreans

Naver Webtoon is the country’s leading digital comics player with about 700, 000 works after starting the business there in 2013 through LINE Manga, its service in Japanese.

Naver Webtoon became the No. 1 webtoon provider in terms of transaction volume with the acquisition of eBOOK Initiative Japan Co. last year. It will foster lineups of Japanese original webtoons further this year.

Last week, Naver unveiled a plan to launch a drama production studio in Japan with South Korean entertainment powerhouse CJ ENM Co. and its drama production house Studio Dragon Corp.

Solo Leveling, a KakaoPage webtoon adapted from a Korean novel of the same name and written by Chu Gong, is available on Piccoma, a manga subscription service from Kakao in Japan.

Solo Leveling has been gaining popularity in Japan since March last year. It has more than 1 million cumulative readers and was named the No. 1 webtoon of 2019 on Piccoma.

Kakao said Sunday that Piccoma achieved its first operating profit in Japan in the fourth quarter last year. Its trading volume increased 2.3 times year-on-year last year and more than doubled for the third consecutive year.

According to online application tracker App Annie, it ranked No. 1 in total sales of non-game apps and had the most MAU among manga apps on Google Play and App Store in Japan last year.

In the United States, the number of Line Webtoon’s MAU surpassed 10 million in November last year. Released last December in France, Line Webtoon ranked No. 1 in the Google Play’s comics category.

NHN Comico’s webtoon platform Comico recorded 18.2 million downloads in Japan and 34 million cumulative downloads worldwide as of November last year.

The global success of Korean webtoon platforms in Japan and the United States is meaningful in that those two are the leaders of the global comics market.

According to the Korea Creative Content Agency, the estimated size of the Japanese comics market was $4.12 billion, and the U.S. comics market was $1.14 billion, ranking first and second, respectively.

“Confirmed through KakaoPage and Daum Webtoon, K-Webtoon is enjoying as much popularity in Japan as local comics through Piccoma, ” said Kim Jae-yong, chief executive of Kakao Japan.

As of April 3, webtoons are only 277 out of some 20, 000 works on Piccoma, but the daily transactions totalled 31.96 million yen.

Naver Webtoon’s True Beauty ranked No. 2 on Line Webtoon in the United States in 2019 as of November last year. Naver Webtoon Tower of God, which was released as a Korea-U.S.-Japan joint animation on April 1, topped Reddit’s weekly animation ranking.

“Because both the Japanese and U.S. comics markets rely heavily on traditional publishing, the Korean webtoon market had a chance to enter the digital comic market, ” said an official at the Korea Creative Content Agency.
