This course is the first half of the Elementary Korean language sequence. It is designed for those who have no prior (or very limited) knowledge of Korean. Lecture will introduce new material and explain conversational patterns considering grammatical, lexical, and pragmatic aspects of Korean. Some ss meetings will be conducted entirely in Korean. Emphasis is placed on the fundamentals of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In addition, students will be exposed to everyday life contexts (e.g., language use, culture, etc.) likely to be encountered in contemporary Korean society.

The main purpose of this course is to expand on the study of the Korean language and culture, and develop an Intermediate Low proficiency level. Some ss meetings are conducted entirely in Korean. Students practice reading and listening comprehension, grammar, vocabulary building, and conversations that require a variety of styles, pragmatic considerations, and knowledge of Korean cultural topics. Skills for simple narration and written report will be enhanced. Students rely on authentic materials for introduction of Korean culture and authentic language usage.
Prerequisite: Korean 202 or as determined by a placement test and the instructor. This course aims to help students develop their language skills in four areas-speaking, listening, reading, and writing- in Korean at the advanced level. It covers grammar and vocabulary, reading comprehension, fluency, conversation manners, and public speaking. Emphasis will be on the appropriate use of Korean in a variety of situations including schools, companies, and formal/informal meetings. This course also enables students to understand Korean culture and history and to develop cross-cultural insights by comparing Korean society with US society. Korean history, image of Korea, and current social trends in Korea will be discussed for a solid understanding of Korean culture in which Korean language is embedded.

Korean 102 is the second half of the elementary Korean language sequence. As a continuation of Korean 101, the main purpose of Korean 102 is to lay ground work for the study of Korean language and culture. To achieve Intermediate Mid level proficiency, students practice reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, and conversation using textbooks and authentic materials for introduction of Korean culture and authentic language usage.

A 20-year-old Indian-origin student named Varun Manish Chheda, studying at Purdue University was found murdered in his dormitory in the US state of Indiana. His Korean roommate was taken into custody, according to media reports. Reason behind the killing has not been ascertained.

Varun Manish Chheda from Indianapolis was found dead in McCutcheon Hall on the western edge of campus, police said on Wednesday. Another university student was arrested on a murder charge Wednesday, NBC News quoted the school's police chief as saying.
Ji Min “Jimmy Sha, a junior cybersecurity major and international student from Korea, called 911 around 12:45 am on Wednesday to alert police about the death, Purdue University Police Chief Lesley Wiete said at a news conference Wednesday morning.
Details of the call were not disclosed. Authorities said the incident happened in a room on the first floor of McCutcheon Hall. But several heard his screams on Wednesday

Arunabh Sinha, a childhood friend of Chheda’s, told NBC News that Chheda had been gaming and talking with friends online on Tuesday night when they suddenly heard screaming on the call.
Sinha was not playing with his friends that night, but they told him they heard the attack and didn’t know what happened. They woke up Wednesday morning to news of his death.
Wiete said Sha, 22, was taken into custody minutes after the 911 call and taken to the police station for further investigation.
