Why So Serious Korean Song

Why So Serious Korean Song

The views presented in this analysis are a part of my own individual interpretation of the video, which means they are subject to error. This post is based off of the Why So Serious MV and the album Wikipedia page. All English lyrics are taken from kpoplyrics.net.

This analysis took me a little bit longer than expected. The video features a lot of dancing, so the plot is a tad obscured. I had to pull a little bit more information from what’s been said about the album in order to connect a deeper meaning to the music video. According to Wikipedia, Director Lee Sungsoo said this album, Misconceptions of Me, was about SHINee’s own misconceptions–“the dreams I slowly wanted for myself” and“the misconception of ideals.” The album therefore focuses on“the gap between SHINees reality and dreams.” Jonghyun had also said that this album would be both darker and dreamier than the previous Misconceptions of You.

The album is about idealism. The song is about a zombie. The video is about a girl’s arrival at an asylum (more correctly termed a psychiatric hospital). The album is supposed to be dark, but the song and video are both bright and upbeat. In this post, I attempt to reconcile all these aspects with one another.

How Did K Pop Conquer The World?

(A little side information: Jonghyun is not in the video because he was recovering from a car accident while it was being filmed. Also, the girl in the video is said to be Irene from Red Velvet. I may refer to her several times as Irene, simply because ‘the girl’ gets really repetitive.)

Misconceptions of Zombies: Lyrically, the song is a zombie’s expression of love for a living girl, if taken literally. From an analytical standpoint, the lyricist is using zombie imagery to show that he was so jaded with life that he might as well be a zombie–alive but not living. When he meets this girl, he suddenly feels drawn to life again. She is more alivethan anyone else and we wants to become like her. With this, the lyricist is called to deeply optimistic thinking as he projects his ideals on the girl.

First the titular question is asked, “why so serious?” as the idealistic and optimistic genuinely don’t understand the worries or concerns of realists. Then he denies Romeo and Julietis a sad love story. Either he’s suggesting that the play did not, in fact, end in tragedy, which is a ludicrous suggestion, or that their version of the love story will end better. Their love, too, is starcrossed, though their version must work out, though there is no reasoning for why this must be. His promise that everything will be alright is contingent upon an“inevitable happy ending.” I do not need to explain the error in this logic.

This line speaks to me from the zombie standpoint. If you’re becoming more like your zombie lover, it’s more likely you’re transforming into a zombie rather than he’s becoming human. His love for her is destructive, as in striving to attain her quality of life, he robs her of it.

Here, he acknowledges that he may appear brainless due to his apparent worry-free state of mind, further alluding to the zombie metaphor. Still, he insists he has worries, though the next line suggests he has said this in order to appear more reasonable, as he sings, “See? I don’t know about humanism…” I don’t know if the translator actually meant ‘humanism’ or if they were thinking of‘humanity.’ If‘humanism, ’ then it suggests that he doesn’t know much about rationality; if‘humanity, ’ then it suggests he doesn’t know much about worrying, as it is human nature to worry.

Misconceptions of the Insane: It took me to the end of the video to realize the setting: a psychiatric hospital. Though this is the proper term, I’d rather refer to it as an asylum. In fiction, specifically the horror genre, they’re more commonly referred to as asylums. As this is a highly fictionalized portrayal of such a setting, I think‘asylum’ fits better. Continuing on…the title is, of course, “Why So Serious?”–a phrase commonly associated with DC’s infamous villain the Joker. This allusion reinforces the asylum setting and themes of insanity. The message here is that idealism and blind optimism are in themselves forms of insanity. (Just a little clarification, this is in no way a commentary on actual mental illnesses.)

As the video begins, reference to zombie lyrical content is immediately made via choreography. Taemin and Key stand in zombie-esque poses. The sauntering dancing could be reference to a zombie’s clumsy gait, as if they were dragging a less than mobile foot. They also lay on the floor, like zombies waiting to be revived.

This black room contrasts the dominant white of the asylum setting. Where the white is plain, pure, non-confrontational, the red is provocative and violent. Where an ideal may be pure, the reality may be much more disconcerting.

Irene makes her first appearance climbing the steps of an entirely white building. The blue sky is free of clouds. She’s dressed in white. Inside, there are more stairs, leading to the white room SHINee waits in. She’s ascending, climbing to the level of an ideal. We never see her face full on for very long periods of time. This is because ideals are subjective, so they can’t give one girl the assumption of all ideals.

The room is all white, as is typical of depictions of asylum rooms. Huge letters spell out ‘why so serious.’ In every picture frame, it says ‘why so serious’ as well, so do the books. There are hardly any indication of the outside world.

The first of may fake dogs can be seen behind Taemin, as well as a vase full of what looks to be carnations. Both dogs and carnations can be symbols of luck. If the dogs are fake, it begs the question of whether there is genuine luck or good fortune in play, or simply optimism.

At one point, there’s a real dog, as boundary between real and imaginary is crossed. It’s as if wishful thinking can translate into actual good fortune.

The members interact in a playful manner with her. They compete for her attention and do things like play hide and seek behind the aquarium.

The red letters stacked behind Onew sell out‘why so serious.’ All the extraneous letters, those in white, are backwards, as if they can’t make sense of anything besides their persistent idealism.

Though it’s a little hard to read from my ill-timed screenshot, Taemin’s shirt says ‘stop making sense’ and Minho’s says ‘be reasonable demand the impossible.’ Both are contrary statements, but give an insight to the nature of idealism. Isn’t idealism, perfectly reasonable in our own minds, demanding the impossible?

Though the Searching for Mary Poppins and Runnin’ with the Big Dogstitles don’t seem to give any insight to the video (they’re about mother-nanny relationships and football rivalries), The Secretdoes. Toward the end of the video, they acknowledge the camera. Minho salutes. Onew waves. In this, they seem to acknowledge their playacting, their flamboyant optimism, idealism, and they are unrepentant.

In one of the above screenshots, the clock is visible. It’s pointing to midnight (or noon). Every time a clock is shown, this is the time. This could be a reference to the midnight of the lyrics.

Minho has a fake steering wheel, a child’s play thing, like the dogs, that dinosaur behind Taemin on the bed, the stuffed bunny sitting on the pillow. It’s very similar to a child’s room. Their optimism makes them like children.

Despite their time in an asylum, they do not look bothered by their apparent insanity. They’re playful, even joyful. At the end, Irene is dancing by herself as if she’s been initiated into their world–she’s learned their carefreeness. As the guard peeks in through the window, we can see that SHINee isn’t really there. Irene, too, has adopted their madness. Either they left or they were never there to begin with. Either way, SHINee was what drew her into the asylum and into the madness.

Misconceptions of Ideals: Ideals are appealing because you like the thought of who you’d become with that person. Ideals allow you to project your ideal self upon an idea, an object, a person. Getting into my ideal college would mean I’m intelligent. Getting my ideal car would mean I’m rich enough or cool enough to own it. Getting my ideal guy would mean I’m either attractive enough or caring enough. But having all these things doesn’t necessarily mean that I am what the possessions may imply. I get into my dream school, then what? I have to keep working to maintain that grade. Being in the school does not automatically make me intelligent. Having my dream car doesn’t mean I’m rich, I have to keep making payments, maybe falling into debt. Having the hot boyfriend doesn’t mean I’m hot, I have to keep up the effort to maintain my appearance, keep up the
