Kim Dae Mun Korean Food Singapore

Nestled on the first floor of Concorde Shopping Mall, Kim Dae Mun is one of the most affordable Korean eateries you can find along the upscale Orchard Road. Popular among families, students and cubicle rats, the inconspicuous restaurant is known for their legit Korean dishes such as kimchi soup and bibimbap that give off a home-cooked vibe.

Kim Dae Mun is helmed by Kim Hyeon Ju, who took over the reins from her father after graduating from Nanyang Technological University. In fact, the restaurant’s name is inspired by her family name, as well as two of the most popular shopping districts in Seoul: Dongdaemun and Namdaemun.

One of the restaurant’s most highly raved dishes is the Spicy Pork ($10.50), a sizzling hotplate dish loaded with marinated pork, spring onions, and cabbage. Don’t be too worried by the meat’s bright orange colour; the dish is said to be manageably spicy, and best paired with a bowl of white rice. Red Bean Rice ($1.50) is also available if you prefer a healthier alternative.

Another popular dish is the Kimchi Soup With Pork ($9.50). This gets you a hearty plate of meat, beancurd, cabbage, onions, and glass noodles soaked in a savoury-sour broth. Diners can also request to swap out the pork for either chicken or beef, if they’d like.

The Tender Sliced Beef ($12) is another dish that’s highly praised, featuring tender slices of beef topped with vegetables. Rice dishes are also available, such as Bibimbap ($10): pickled radish, spinach, seaweed, cucumber, chives, carrots, bean sprouts, and a sunny-side up sitting atop a bed of rice.

If you’re looking for something to share, order the Fried Dumplings ($11): juicy Korean mandu stuffed with lightly seasoned ingredients such as pork, vegetables, and glass noodles. As the dumplings are said to be light on the palate, you can also choose to dip them in your kimchi soup for extra flavour!

I visited the restaurant on a Thursday evening and it was filled with working adults, groups of friends and even families!

Now married with 2 children, 38-year-old Kim Hyeon Ju started working in the food industry, alongside her father, when she graduated from local university NTU. Her father used to be a Head Chef at Seoul Garden before starting the family business. Ever since he retired, Hyeon Ju has been running and managing the restaurant.

Fun fact: the restaurant name “Kim Dae Mun” is actually a combination of the family name “Kim”, and references to Dongdaemun and Namdaemun — two of the most popular shopping and tourist districts in Seoul. While Dae Mun translates to Da Men (大門) in Chinese, and Big Gate in English, Dong translates to East, and Nam translates to South. Thus, in a way, the restaurant’s name embodies the flow of tourism and business from all directions, and also the Korean heritage and culture.

First, I tried the Tender Sliced Beef ($10.50). The slices of beef were indeed, as its name suggests, tender, but also chewy and tremendously flavourful! It was also not too salty and came with a decent amount of vegetables, rice, and soup! With each meal, you also have a choice of 1 side — kimchi, Korean styled stir-fried anchovies, or spicy cucumber salad.

Kim Dae Mun Korean Food also serves Chicken/ Beef/ Seafood/ Fish soups ($8.50), Kimchi Soup with Pork ($8), Dumpling Soup ($6.50), Bean Paste & Vegetables Soup ($8), and Beancurd Soup ($8).

Kim Dae Mun Is An Authentic Korean Eatery With Under S$10 Mains In Orchard

I decided to try their Chicken Soup, which was served piping hot with a mixture of ingredients such as chicken, vegetables, noodles, egg, and tofu. The set meal also comes with rice. Although more slices of chicken would have been ideal, the soup was to die for. It was only mildly spicy and was incredibly comforting.

The dumplings, which were filled with ingredients such as pork, vegetable, and the same noodles found in their Chicken Soup, were juicy and had a crusty exterior. If we order this together, you’ll be lucky if I decide to share even one dumpling with you!

The restaurant also has a drinks stall at the entrance, which is manned by a part-time staff who is… yep you guessed it, also Korean! Before leaving the restaurant, I asked Kim if she had any plans to expand the business or hand it down to her children in the future. She heaved a sigh and said that running the restaurant is not easy due to long working hours, high turnover rate, and expensive rent.

As it's name suggest, Kim Dae Mun Korean Food specialises in serving Korean cuisine. They order quite an extensive variety of dishes ranging from soup, meat, rice, ramen and side dishes. In a short time span of 4 years, the eatery has shifted located 3 times times; from the food court at level 1 to level 2 and then back to another standalone bigger unit at level. I doubt they will move further as the sitting capacity that they have now is huge!

The kitchen and counter is manned by Koreans. This is the Ahjumma who always takes the order at the counter. After taking the order, she would always relay the order to the kitchen through a mike.

Although there is always a queue, they are perfectly trained to handle the crowd. They moved with clock work precision. I waited just 10 minutes and the food was ready. Upon collection of the food, customers could choose between kimchi, anchovies or cucumbers as sides.

Kim Dae Mun Korean Food Orchard, Singapore Bibimbap Review

The Spicy Soup Set is one of their most highly raved dish online. This time round I ordered the version that comes with beef;Spicy Beef Soup Set $8.The set consisted of a big bowl of spicy beef soup served with a bowl of rice and a side dish.I chose anchovies.

Kim

The Spicy Beef Soup Set was filled with generous amounts of ingredients such as slices of beef, beancurd, vegetable, Korean (thick) vermicilli, spring onion, egg and onions. The soup was spicy and tasty - not salty (I doubt MSG was added). The combination of soup with rice was perfect. In terms of the price, it was reasonable considering the quantity and taste of the food.

This is the Korean's version of mixed rice, that comes with a variety of vegetables, an egg, rice, meat (in this case I had beef) and the hot chili pepper paste (also know as gochujang).

Kim Dae Mun Korean Cuisine, Singapore

Give it a good mix to ensure that each grain of rice is well coated with thehot chili pepper paste. With each mouthful, you would be able to to experience different texture and taste due to the assortment of vegetables (some are crunchy whereas some are soft).

The beef was well marinated and tasty. However, certain pieces were hard and tough. At $10, I thought that the price is on the higher end (i.e. not so value for money).

I will certainly be back at Kim Dae Mun Korean Food to try out other dishes. I have been wanting to try their ramen. Their food is quite the tasty and authentic. Moreover, it is now no longer tough to find seats!
