Korean Dog Rescue San Francisco

Korean Dog Rescue San Francisco

Free Korean Dogs is a registered charity founded in 2015 with the mission to rescue, rehabilitate and find forever-loving homes for dogs saved from the Korean dog meat trade.

Our journey began when our founder, EK Park, witnessed a horrifying scene in her native South Korea. The brutality she witnessed compelled her to take action and speak out against the suffering endured by millions of dogs in the Korean dog meat trade. Korea’s lack of legislation regulating this industry allows for unfathomable inhumane treatment, making it a political landmine that few in power wish to address.

About

We divide our mission across three basic pillars: rescue, adoption, and awareness. Since 2015, we’ve made huge advances in all three areas, shutting down three dog meat farm operations, facilitating the adoption of over 1, 500 rescue dogs, and launching Freedom Walk, our annual event to raise public awareness about the Korean dog meat trade:

EK Park, originally from South Korea, moved to Canada in 2002. She studied new media and pursued a career as a professional photographer and videographer. However, her desire to use her skills for a cause dear to her heart—advocating for vulnerable animals and raising public awareness—grew stronger. She began volunteering with local animal rescues, including Toronto Street Cats. However, it was during a visit to her family in Korea that everything changed. Witnessing the horrifying reality of the dog meat trade and the unimaginable cruelty inflicted upon defenceless dogs deeply impacted her.

With over twenty-two years of work experience in the financial industry, William’s in-depth knowledge of business operations, finance and leadership complements the progress and momentum Free Korean Dogs has built in the last few years. William was inspired by Free Korean Dogs and its mission to bring public awareness to animal welfare. He also adopted two Korean rescues, Woojoo and Luna.

Sara has always been an active member of the non-profit community, professionally and in volunteer roles. She is also a lifelong animal lover and is always known to stop to pet stray dogs and cats during her travels. Her two passions match her role in helping dogs find their forever homes. Along with dogs, Sara loves pigs, cows, and goats and believes in the words of her favourite activists, “be kind to all kinds.”

Since retiring in 2012, David has devoted his time to caring for his aging Shiba Inu and volunteering at various film and music festivals around Vancouver. After the passing of his Shiba, David connected with Free Korean Dogs and started volunteering for them in 2018, where he adopted a FKD rescue, Jingu, in February 2019. “It’s so rewarding seeing the anticipation and joy on the adopters’ faces when they meet their new dogs for the first time at the airport.”

Andrew is a small business owner and entrepreneur based in Vancouver, BC. Raised on a hobby farm and the son of a veterinarian, he has a lifelong love of all animals. He discovered Free Korean Dogs while looking for a charity that had a direct, tangible impact on saving dogs. He strongly believes in the mission of FKD and won’t stop offering support in any way he can until every dog is saved.

Steve has always loved dogs. Having personally rescued four dogs (so far), he is delighted to help the Free Korean Dogs family by completing the required documentation at customs and the cargo offices in Toronto. Meeting the adopters and handing over their precious new rescues is reward enough!

Erin is a Seattle native who works in the public policy and politics sector in Washington State. She has had a deep connection to all animals since childhood, but since she grew up in a pet-free household, she had to get creative! Erin started walking and sitting neighborhood dogs in elementary school and has been increasingly active in dog care, fostering, and rescue ever since. Erin adopted Winter, her second Jindo, from FKD in 2020 and has loved meeting and helping the sweet FKD fosters who land in Seattle in search of their forever home. He has lived and worked in Asia, Europe, and the Pacific before settling in Portland with his wife Sook, and their FKD, Hwani. In her free time, Jenny loves to take Gordon on hikes, car rides, and shopping (especially at Sephora – one of Gordon’s favourite stores).
