While most international fans associate horror entertainment with the season of fall, South Korea tends to view horror entertainment as a way to cool off in the summer heat. And what better way to spend summertime than watching a ghostly drama? Of course, unlike horror films,
Follows the two as they pair up to fight ghosts and help them find peace. Their antagonistic relationship is cute to watch and adds a sense of light-hearted fun to the show as they bicker and, begrudgingly, support one another.
However, things aren’t as simple as they seem, and in these first two episodes, viewers are introduced to a number of mysteries. The most significant mystery is Hyun-ji’s memory loss. Hyun-ji doesn’t know why or how she died nor why she is stuck in limbo. Through an accidental kiss, she finds herself reunited with the briefest of memories and thus ensues her quest to kiss Bong-pal again and regain her memories.
Spooktacular K Dramas To Haunt You This Halloween
In which a female ghost repeatedly tries to make a move on a human man. The situation is played off for laughs but not everyone will feel comfortable with this portrayal especially as Kim So-hyun is still a minor in real life (while Taecyeon is in his late twenties).
Avoids sexualizing Kim So-hyun and the “kiss” is rather chaste. Even the kiss at the end of the second episode looks fake, as if the show is trying to avoid having the actors actually kiss. So far, while the ghost-pursues-kissing plot makes me roll my eyes, I don’t have problems with the way the show is building Hyun-ji and Bong-pal’s relationship.
, the majority of the drama thus far is enjoyable. Of particular note is the balance of horror and comedy. The ghosts in the drama are creepy with great CGI to strengthen the horror factor. However,
The Best Fantasy K Dramas You Should Watch
For example, when Bong-pal is first introduced, a ghost does its best to scare him. Bong-pal responds by slapping the ghost and instead of a fight, the ghost asks for forgiveness before leaving. And instead of building up Bong-pal to be a ghost-hunting badass, the show injects humor by having him run away from a ghostly Choi Hong-man — cameo by the famous MMA fighter. Basically, Bong-pal fights ghosts, but only the weak ones.
, slowly lays down the foundation for further conflict and unanswered mysteries that will keep viewers turning in. Why did a ghost kill Bong-pal’s mother and why does he seem to feel like it was his fault? What makes some ghosts good or bad and why are some more sentient than others? And what does veterinarian and professor Joo Hye-sung (Kwon Yool) have to do with anything? Sure, he has a strange supernatural growth on his back, but how does he fit into the story of Bong-pal and Hyun-ji?
Decides to answer. After all, I don’t think Hye-sung’s mystery will be revealed for a while, but in the meantime, more world-building would be appreciated as well as learning about Bong-pal’s past. But even if we don’t get that, as long as the drama continues it’s unique mix of horror and comedy, it will be a fun, summer watch.Spellbound (Korean: 오싹한 연애 ; Hanja: 오싹한 戀愛 ; RR: Ossakhan Yeonae; lit. A Philippine adaptation of Spellbound was released on February 1, 2023 by Viva Films. The film stars Bela Padilla and Marco Gumabao. We celebrated Halloween some time ago but I am still in the ‘spooky’ mood. Whenever I finish a long and emotionally tiring drama, I like taking a drama-break with something totally different and maybe a bit out of the box of the usual intense triangular romance that I prefer. As you know, there is a great variety of Korean dramas and everyone can find something that they will like. Do you want a good old family drama? No problem. Maybe some blood and investigations? There is plenty as well. But what if you want romance with a twist, let’s say some ghosts or vampires? Don’t worry, Korean dramas have it all. Don’t get me wrong, I am definitely not a horror movie fan (note: Koreans are also ‘ bloody’ good in the horror movie genre) but after years of romance-drama watching, I do appreciate a supernatural twist here and there. These dramas probably won’t give you nightmares, but will keep you entertained and hyped as they mix romance and mystery well. Without further ado, let me jump into my as usual subjective, top 5 ranking of my favorite Korean romance dramas with ghosts!
K Drama Review:
Well now is when you let go a horrified scream “WHAAAAT only number 5??”. ‘Master sun’ is a very popular Korean drama, beloved in Korea and among international viewers. As this is a subjective ranking, let me express an unpopular view here. I highly dislike the actress Gong Hyo Jin. Ok, now I said it. I feel like she always plays the same neurotic, old spinster that is supposed to be funny but ends up being super annoying. Unfortunately, ‘Master Sun’ is no exception to this rule. The drama follows Tae Gong Shil who started seeing ghosts after an accident, but although many years have passed she is still terrified to be around them (ok, who can blame her, ghosts are scary…).
Tae Gong Shil crosses paths with Joo Joong Won, a rich and greedy CEO with a dark love-trauma. They decide to team up as our CEO needs help to chase some ghosts and make more profit, and Tae Gong Shil discovers that as long as she can touch the CEO she is temporarily safe from ghosts.
This drama made it into my top 5 ranking, because of the great performance by actor So Ji Sub that plays a difficult to like yet so charming rich guy. The story itself is also entertaining, as each ghost story has an interesting plot and the whole drama gravitates around a traumatic event that we uncover piece by piece.
Supernatural K Dramas You Need To Binge Watch
If you are looking for a drama with ghosts, and you don’t want to slap Gong Hyo Jin whenever she comes on screen.
‘Oh my Ghost‘ was a drama I originally ignored because of the unappelling plot description and the strange drama-poster. The drama follows Bong Seon, a skilled cook and food blogger with absolutely no confidence in love and life. One day she gets possessed by a lustful virgin ghost, masterfully played by actress Kim Seul Gi, who
