Romance that is dreamy, quirky, heartfelt, and, with a touch of something magical. Characters who perfectly belong to this fictional yet palpable world and who lend incredible richness and immediacy to the proceedings. A story that is crafted with care and that uses familiar tropes to delve deep into thoughts, emotions, and meaning.
K Drama Review] 'you Are My Spring': It's Heart Fluttering, But It Also Has A Clear Letdown Mymusictaste
There is drama here and fantasy…… dark secrets and noble ideals….. sharp legal manoeuvrings and philosophical musings on notions of truth and justice, crime and punishment. There are chilling moments in I Hear Your Voice and also, moments of simple and unfeigned, droll and poignant human interaction. In the heart of the tale, however, is a unique love story between a defence lawyer and a high school student. A practical, no-nonsense woman who wants to take the known and tested road in life and an exceptional young man who compels her to embrace possibilities beyond her imagination.
Park Soo-ha, the male protagonist, is portrayed by the talented and very handsome Lee Jong-suk. The actor exhibits a calm and collected demeanour, despite his extreme youth. His unwavering eyes and gentle, self-possessed smiles convey a sense of confidence and serenity. His still gaze holds a power that seems to be carefully restrained, a passion that is quiet and true. So, when Soo-ha pursues his love for the much older Hye-sung, we not only can accept his ardour but can also be wholly persuaded by the rightness of his decision.
And, it is a decision. A promise to protect. Soo-ha made Hye-sung his life’s purpose when he was only eight-years old. The terrible trauma he suffered as a young boy forced him to attain an awareness beyond his years. In I Hear Your Voice, this maturity gets manifested through Soo-ha’s supernatural ability to read the minds of people…… when he looks into their eyes. As a result, he also acquires the capacity to understand others to a degree that would escape even the most empathetic adult.
A Pleasant Season Premiere
It is strangely fascinating to watch this tall, slender boy… with his loose, long-limbed, youthful grace and an almost otherworldly air… become a custodian of a woman, who is more than ten years his senior. Soo-ha spends more than half the screen time lounging in his high-school uniform. Hye-Sung, on the other hand, is almost always smartly and sophisticatedly attired. He is perched on the cusp of manhood. She is a public defender, who oozes confidence. He is quiet and watchful. She is feisty and full of disdain. He is a student still and she has already launched a promising career. And yet, it is Park Soo-ha who is the driving force in this uncommon relationship.
There’s a scene where Soo-ha tries to tell Hye-sung that she should trust in the innocence of a particular defendant and work to fight for truth, rather than taking the easy way out. The jaded heroine is quite outraged at the audacity of one who is only a teenager and stranger. She flatly refuses to entertain his words. But, Soo-ha just picks her up like an errant child and makes her listen to him. And, she is too surprised to resist.
Eventually, Hye-sung does end up dropping her veneer of nonchalance and getting down to investigating the facts of the case and presenting a solid defence. While watching her in the courtroom, Soo-ha casts at Hye-sung an amazingly intimate glance of pride and satisfaction…. an indulgent, even affectionate gaze that says that he knows her better than she does herself.

And, Hye-sung after choosing to fight for her client, actually turns towards Soo-ha…. with not just gladness on her face…. but also, a searching expression… as if seeking his approval. This is the kind of role reversal that makes this drama so riveting.
Park Soo-ha, when he was only a child, witnessed his father being attacked and bludgeoned to death. He would have faced a similar end but for the sudden arrival of the adolescent Hye-Sung. Despite grave threats to her life, she testified against the killer, Min Joon-guk, that directly led to his incarceration for a number of years. Soo-ha, even in his bereaved state, recognised Hye-Sung‘s distress and fear. Her courage. The way she sacrificed her peace of mind. And, he vowed to protect her as if it was the only thing left to do. No childish bravado or empty words of sympathy and vague reassurance. Only a soft and firm tone of acceptance and inevitability.
Soo-ha arms himself with a singular sense of purpose, from very early on. In a way, he resembles the cold-blooded murderer, Min Joon-guk, because he is also driven by an internal compulsion so great, that it seems like destiny. But whereas the former is fuelled by bitterness and hatred,
I Can See Your Voice Season 9 (2022)
The young hero spends all his growing years preparing himself for the role he has chosen to play. For the duty that life has thrust upon him. He trains in martial arts and becomes a taekwondo champion. He attends his classes diligently… can cook, clean, repair…. has all the skills required to not only be self-sufficient but also be someone who is eminently reliable. Consciously or unconsciously, Soo-ha works his way towards
When Soo-ha sees Hye-sung standing in front of the dark lane near her house, he perceives her fear at once and like a silent guardian angel, he repairs all the streetlights that night itself. He comes crashing through her door when he finds out about the release of Min Joon-guk from prison. He fixes the broken lock of the door because Hye-sung is too occupied. Soo-ha defends her against an unruly group of bullies who intimidate her. Everyday, he walks with her to the courtroom and waits outside for her to finish work…. so that he can see her safely home.
It is not that Soo-ha is able to maintain his prodigious composure all the time. There are moments in I Hear Your Voice, when the shield around him cracks and we catch a glimpse of the vulnerable boy, who was forced to grow up too soon. It happens mostly when Hye-sung is exposed to danger. We see Soo-ha raging, even murderous…. or distraught and lost. The scene where he breaks down in the phone booth is particularly heart-wrenching. Or, when he sees her prostrate body being carried to the ambulance.
