The South Korean new car market drops -4.1% year-on-year in July to 148.055 units, with local carmakers down -3.9% to 128.602 and foreigners down -5.2% to 19.453. Year-to-date, the overall volume is down -4.3% to 1.011.718, handicapped by a -20% freefall by foreigners (128.805) while locals hold much better at -1.5% to 882.913. Hyundai (-4.3%) drives the market at 36.4% share vs. 39.8% so far in 2019 while Kia (-0.5%) is almost immobile at 31.6% vs. 28.6%. Below Ssangyong (-11.4%), Renault Samsung (+9.3%) and most strikingly Mercedes (+55.8%) impress with very solid gains ahead of GM Korea (-25.3%) and Genesis (+3.4%) also in tidy shape. Citroen (+48%), Rolls Royce (+45.5%), Jeep/Chrysler (+39.3%), Cadillac (+37.4%), Lexus (+32.5%), Porsche (+12.1%), Mini (+6.5%) and Volvo (+6.4%) also make themselves noticed further down.

The local models ranking gets a reshuffle this month, with the Hyundai Porter (+29.4%) leaping to both the July and YTD lead, the Kia K7 (+149.1%) spectacularly pushed to 2nd place overall by a new generation – the nameplate’s highest ever ranking and 2nd incursion on the podium after February 2016 (#3). The K7 is therefore the #1 passenger car at home this month, outselling the recently relaunched Hyundai Sonata (+35.7%) as well as the Santa Fe (-25.3%) and Grandeur (-28.4%). The Samsung QM6 aka Renault Koleos (+50%) and Kia Bongo (+16.4%) are the only two additional Top 10 nameplates in positive. Below the Hyundai Palisade rallying back up 5 spots on June to #12, the Kia Seltos lands directly at #14 for its first appearance in the South Korean charts, well above its twin the Hyundai Venue landing at #25.

The Indian automobile industry may be in a spot of bother with falling sales and poor numbers across segments, but that has not stopped South Korean auto major Kia Motors from announcing the global debut of its SUV Seltos in India.

The Seltos has been designed and developed keeping the Indian market in mind but will be exported from the company's plant in Anantpur, Andhra Pradesh, to the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and other Asian countries.

Earlier, Kia had said it was considering bringing in six models in three years, which is one model every six months, including an India-exclusive electric vehicle.

The company, however, is not considering the compact car segment, which accounts for about 70 per cent of the total Indian market.

In total, the company has invested $2 billion in India, including $1.1 billion at the plant which has a capacity of 3 lakh units annually, according to Kia Motors Corporation president and chief executive officer Han-Woo Park.

Facelifted

Park said Kia is beginning its journey in India with 265 touch points in 160 cities. It will be increased to 300 by 2020 and 350 by 2021.

The cars, especially the top end variants are likely to be well equipped. Company sources have revealed that these cars are likely to feature a 10.25 inch touchscreen infotainment system, along with a HUD (Heads Up Display), 360-degree camera, sunroof, leather upholstery, and even a Bose sound system.

It has been reported that when the Seltos hits the market in a few months, it is likely to be priced between Rs 11-17 lakh. Since the Seltos will be BS6-compliant from Day one, it will not, unlike its competitors need to bump up price when the norms kick in on April 1, 2020.

When the Seltos is launched, it will be offered with two petrol engines and a diesel engine though the power output has not yet been disclosed. The first petrol engine is a 1.4-litre turbocharged unit while the second will be a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre block. The diesel engine is also a 1.5-litre unit. All three engines are BS6-compliant.

The engines will be mated to one manual and three automatic transmissions. Three driving modes (Eco, Normal and Sport) and three terrain modes (Mud, Wet and Sand) are also on offer.

The South Korean automobile manufacturer unveiled the third-generation iteration of the Sorento SUV in August 2014. The facelifted models gets design changes on the outside as well as more premium features inside. The SUV is available with a choice of three engine options in South Korea. The SUV is priced between 27, 850, 000 - 34, 250, 000 Won in South Korea.

Back in 2014, the new-gen makeover of the Kia Sorento brought a totally revised design. The facelifted iteration maintains that theme but with added sportiness. The front gets a revised grille while carrying forward the Tiger Nose look with chrome bits that is a popular trait of this SUV. The new headlight design gives a sleeker profile and also comes with projector lights. The LED DRLs have been repositioned to the bottom section. The front bumper too has been revised to house the new LED foglamps that looks similar in design to the Sportage. While the side profile remains unchanged, the rear gets new light with additional LED stripe. The bumper design has been tweaked too with new reflectors and exhaust pipe design. The alloy wheel design of the previous model has been replaced by a sportier 19-inch design that will be standard on the top end variant.

The 2018 Kia Sorento's interior too has been updated for a more premium design. This can be seen with the new steering wheel as well as the gear selector. Kia will be offering more colour and options for the customer to choose. Importantly, Kia will also be offering CarPlay and Android Auto as standard connectivity methods for its new-age touchscreen infotainment system on the Sorento. There is also an option of opting for wireless smartphone charging. In addition, the Kia Sorento also comes equipped with multiple safety features like blind spot warning, forward collision assist, adaptive headlights and lane assist.

In terms of powertrain choices, there is the 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel that makes 186PS/402Nm followed by the 2.2-liter turbodiesel that generates 202PS/441Nm. There is also a 2.0-liter petrol motor that makes a maimum of 240PS and generates 353Nm. The facelifted Kia Sorento will be available in both front-wheel drive or all-wheel drivetrains.
