A Korean Odyssey Review

A Korean Odyssey Review

About A Korean Odyssey: In a world where demons live among humans, a gifted woman teams up with a reluctant and mischievous god to fight spirits. Because of a cursed bracelet, the god falls in love with the her. Lots of demon in-fighting ensues with a side of zombie drama.

Quirky Characters & Creativity Points: Lots of things make up a good drama, but for me personally, creativity plays a huge role in whether I fall in love with a show or not. Hwayugi gets extra points for having a quirky fantasy setup with really fun characters. It’s hard to pick favorites, but I had the most feels for the relationship between P.K. and his zombie hyung Bu Ja. I also loved the dynamic between Ma Wong and his loyal servant dog Ma Ji-Young. The priestess was interesting and I I enjoyed the dynamic of the winter and summer fairy.

Beautiful Costumes and Scenery: After the CGI mishap of the first couple of episodes, the show had great costumes and lovely scenery, especially in the dream worlds and god realms. The peddlers shop was gorgeous and mysterious and a lot of the backdrops were striking.

Hancinema's Drama Review] 'a Korean Odyssey' Episode 1 @ Hancinema

This show was really hard for me to review because it was such a mix of good and bad - though that makes for a more interesting review right?

Slow Burn Ship: The leading love line was a bit of a problem for me, though I DID end up enjoying them in the end. I was bored with the push pull of“does he love her/is it just the bracelet” thing that lasted forever. And when I say forever, I mean literally until the very end of the show, so if you don’t like that, you’re stuck with it. I didn’t care about their relationship until episode 8 and if you know me and my love for romance (any romance!) that’s strange. I don’t think the Hong Sisters did a good enough job giving Son Oh Gong depth so it was hard to feel anything when the mains had their love-y moments. I cared a LOT more for the side characters’ relationships.

Monster-Of-The-Week Style episodes: I feel like Hwayugi could have been a magical show if they had cut out the majority of plots about random hauntings and made the episodes shorter (aside from the fact that many of the ghosts were pretty cheesy). I get that they were trying to establish the relationship of Son Oh Gong and Ji Sun Mi but it lasted too long and i never cared about those plot lines and the a lot of the show felt like filler. Not introducing the priestess plot line until much later felt like a misstep.

Show Me Don’t Tell Me: This show was complicated plot wise. In fact it had so much going on I actually FORGOT a major plot point once and had to ask tumblr for help, and saw that some other people in my dash were having the same issues. I think that had a lot to do with the fact that characters were constantly sitting around discussing heavenly issues and rules, instead of actually experiencing them. They would change the rules, make up stuff and take it back and it just added to the confusion. The Hong Sisters should have focused on the important items and cut all of the rest instead of having characters going back and forth chatting about critical details.

A Lot of Hype About Danger: Hwayugi is constantly warning about the dangers of fates, and the punishments that everyone has to go through, and the evils that exist but in reality…nothing was really that bad?! Remember when Ma Wong was told he would die if he took Princess Iron Fan’s punishments, but with a little help from his friends he was simply blind and cold for a little bit? Remember when Sun Mi saw the end-times and for like one episode it felt like impending doom but never actually came to fruition? Remember when there’s a HUGE BLACK DRAGON that everyone is freaking out about and says will lead the world to darkness but it was defeated in like, 15 minutes? Remember when Son Oh Gong was going to die because he killed that dragon but only had k-drama amnesia until it was convenient and timely for him to remember?

The End: As a disclaimer, I have no problem with the end of Hwayugi like many people did. I don’t need a happy ending and I’m ok with the open-ended scenario for this reason: As you noticed from what I said above about Hwayugi’s exaggerations of danger, it’s obvious that Son Oh Gong will probably only lazily look in the underworld for like 5 minutes and find Ji Sun Mi anyways! Mostly I was just surprised that people weren’t bothered by the OTHER elements of the show well before the ending.

What Are Your Views About The Korean Drama 'a Korean Odyssey'?

In Conclusion: I know it seems like I had a lot of negative things to say about Hwayugi, but I think because it tackled so many elements, there were a lot of places for the writers to make mistakes. I give them credit for trying something different even if it is flawed. They get extra points for creativity! I did still enjoy Hwayugi overall, but it missed the mark of being the next great fantasy epic that it was shooting for.Lives to the name the Hong sisters didn't disappoint us after failure of Warm and cozy drama. The romantic-supernatural beings is the main focus for this drama like their dramas before My girlfriend is a Gumiho and Master's sun. Once again the main casts including Cha Seung Won and Lee Seung Gi are the most important actors that breathing life to this funny yet memorable drama, while the heroine Oh Yeon Seo's acting is not bad.

The story itself is modernization of The journey to the west that I had watched like literally forever since they always remake this serial almost once every 2/3 years since I was little but none are like this where supernatural-beings live in modern time while the monk/sam-jang is portrayed as a girl. The great acting and the interesting plot that stays true to Sun Wo Gong's character are the main point why this drama receives high rating after Goblin, still the ending and the actress are much preferable than Goblin.

The TV show is quite unique and the concept is pretty interesting. It has a lot of funny moments and it is really an amazing experience to watch it. The acting is quite good and so is the story. It combines romance, drama, comedy and also horror in the most unexpected way which makes you feel like you are on an emotional roller coaster. It is a very balanced mix and you end up wanting to watch more and more. The characters are very interesting and have the potential to grow. If you want a lot of CGI and a lot of special effects - this is not the show for you. There are some special effects and they are not that awesome, but they are not that important to the story line. I hope this show gets as many seasons as possible because it certainly has the potential to last long.

Hwayugi (a Korean Odyssey) Korean Drama Review

My only criticisms were how long the writers drew out the romance portion and the low budget dragon effect they used at the end. The unrequited romance between the two leads dragged on way too long - giving the show a Soap Operish feel. The dragon looked like a cheap animation.

Those quibbles aside the acting was first rate and the storyline was engaging. Good direction and okay soundtrack rounded out this production.

The leads were attractive and often funny but I especially enjoyed the character Richie. Lee Se-Young played her tragic character with great aplomb.

Is 'a Korean Odyssey' (aka 'hwayugi') On Netflix Uk? Where To Watch The Series

I would rank this slightly lower than Black and Mystic Pop Up Bar. But, overall it was a fun viewing and worth putting on your k-drama list.

But the chutzpah is immense! The central relationships are entertaining. I was particularly taken by the character of The Monkey King, played to perfection by Lee Seung-gi. And I enjoyed it immensely.

The budget effects are cheap, the acting is very theatrical, the episodes are over an hour long each, but it's a really amazing story worthy of binge watching.

Reviews: A Korean Odyssey

A wonderful story based on the monkey goes west legends with a beautiful twist and a totally ok ending. Actors exceptional in my opinion. As this is the third kdrama i have seen, starting late in life (76 years old) watching netflix, as i'm an old woman living in a country in europe, where people are getting too cynical, this drama really made me laugh and cry at the same time. Thank you all so much especial the monkey king.

The romance between Lee Seung-gi and Oh Yeon-Seo felt like a tug of war of give and take. It was some times funny, sometimes sad and sometimes warm. Their chemistry on screen was perfection. Cha Seung-won's performance was the best I have
