This post shares my top 25 recommendations for the best Korean moisturizers for acne-prone skin, or more specifically clog-prone skin. If your skin is prone to breakouts and closed comedones, this post should help you find the right moisturizer for your skin.
Sometimes K beauty is hard to buy easily if you’re in the US or UK, so don’t forget to check out my non K-beauty moisturiser recommendations, too!
In the past few years Korean brands have soared in popularity due their unique formulations. Having looked at ingredient lists in thousands of products over the years, I can safely say that K beauty products do tend to have quite unique ingredients and formulas.
Korean Skincare Routine For Acne Prone Skin
Of course there’s a lot of overlap, but when compared to western formulas they do offer some interesting key ingredients that we don’t see much in the UK or US.
These are mostly natural ingredients that are slowly finding their way in western formulas more and more, but are usually inspired by Korean beauty brands.
I am often asked how to pick out the best moisturizer for your skin type and specifically for acne-prone skin needs. Sadly there is a lot of misleading information out there on ‘moisturisers without pore clogging ingredients‘.
Best Korean Skin Care Products 2024, According To Editors
I have written a much longer article on such ingredients, but I have to say this: trying to avoid all ‘pore clogging’ ingredients will not guarantee clear skin. Comedogenicity is much more complex than simply avoiding ‘pore clogging ingredients’.
When it comes to sensitive skin, it is a little easier to identify ingredients to avoid. Personally I avoid all of these 99% of the time because it just makes life easier. Less irritated skin, less problems.
If you’re thinking ‘fragrance doesn’t upset my skin’, the unfortunate truth is that fragrance is a known allergen that can sensitise skin over time, meaning you can develop problems with it. Problems such as: redness, peri oral dermatitis, irritation pimples and a lot more fun stuff.
Best Korean Skincare Products To Get Rid Of Blackheads
If you have skin like me, you’ll want to combine the information from two lists above when looking for your next moisturiser. Except I’ve done the hard work for you and created a short list!
It’s a little easier to find Korean moisturisers and moisturisers in general for oily skin, if I’m being honest. This is because most oily skin moisturizers have a gel-type, lightweight formula.
I know the satisfying feeling of applying a super rich cream, and I believe it is hard to find a cream like that that’s suitable for acne-prone skin. It doesn’t mean it’s impossible, it’s just a bit more difficult and will require more trial and error.
How I Used Korean Skin Care To Treat My Hormonal Acne
I also don’t believe it’s really necessary for most people with dry skin. Layering serums with hyaluronic acid, facial mists and a gel moisturiser can genuinely provide deep hydration. If you’ve tried a lot of rich creams without much luck, consider trying one of these for a bit of relief from the breakouts.
Contains aloe vera extract, great on a sunburn too! Some may not find aloe products moisturising enough, for others it’s the perfect oil-free formula. Shop the Benton – Aloe Propolis Soothing Gel.
Isntree is a brand I think you can’t go too far wrong with in general. Shop the Isntree Hyaluronic Acid Aqua Gel Cream.
I Used Korean Skincare Products For A Month And My Routine Will Never Be The Same
I always get asked about the Soon Jung Intensive cream, and personally I’m not sure I’d recommend it to people with acne. This lighter version might work well though. Shop the ETUDE – Soon Jung Hydro Barrier Cream.
Not the most minimal ingredients list ever BUT still a nice, gentle rice formula with niacinamide. Shop the Thank You Farmer – Rice Pure Gel and Cream.
I’ve added this to both rich and light creams for oily and dry skin, since it acts as a moisturiser and barrier in-one cream. Shop the PURITO – B5 Panthenol Re-Barrier Cream.
Acne Bringing You Down? Try This 7 Step Korean Skincare Routine
This product has potential for oily skin types as it contains red bean, another alternative to niacinamide if you’re looking to reduce oil production. Shop the Beauty of Joseon – Red Bean Water Gel.
Another of my favourites! I don’t see anyone disagreeing with this (but of course there will be, no guarantees with fussy skin). Shop the COSRX Green Tea Aqua Soothing Gel Cream.
An interesting formula! Does contain Vitamin C which isn’t my usual style, but is obviously not quite as concentrated as a serum etc. This is kind of like an acne treatment gel and moisturiser in-one. This should help with uneven skin tone as an added bonus. Shop the Isntree – Onion Newpair Gel Cream.
Of The Best Korean Cleansers To Ramp Up Your Routine
I think every can get something out of cica (centella asiatica extract), it’s one of my favourite ingredients for acne, dry and combination skin types. Shop the beplain – Cicaful Calming Gel.
A really nice simple formula, beplain makes very simplistic formulas to go at the end of your skincare routine to lock everything in. Shop the beplain – Hyaluronic Aqua Moisturizer.
Another by Etude, I am often asked about the 2x barrier intensive cream, but I feel this is a safer bet for acne-prone skin. Shop the ETUDE – Soon Jung 10 Free Moist Emulsions.
Korean Skin Care For Acne Is Completely Different Than America's Approach
For a slightly richer feel and hydrating effect, try these k-beauty products. It’s a common misconception that a cream will clog pores just because it’s thick. However, there are more thick creams out there that aren’t suited for acne prone skin.
Watch out for shea butter, as some do contain it. Not everyone is sensitive to shea butter but I personally believe I am. If you want to be extra safe, it may be best to avoid it.
Hyaluronic acid is a good choice if you also want to improve the look of fine lines. Shop the Isntree – Hyaluronic Acid Moist Cream.
Best Korean Skincare Brands Of 2023
This is a 50/50 product as not everyone gets along with snail secretion filtrate, the key ingredient in CosRX snail repair cream. There appears to be a link between snail mucin and dust mite allergies, as well as crustacean allergies. Shop the COSRX – Advanced Snail 92 All In One Cream.
This cream provides more of a ‘barrier cream’ feel. Some like it and others don’t like it, it depends what you’re looking for! If you didn’t get on with La Roche Posay Cicaplast B5 Baume, you can think of this as the acne-prone skin care version. Shop the PURITO – B5 Panthenol Re-Barrier Cream.
Lots of really nice barrier health ingredients in this if you are a heavy retinoid or acid user. Shop the Torriden – Balanceful Cica Cream.
K Beauty Acne Warriors: Best Korean Acne Products Bestcheck
A nice short, simple formula. Sometimes korean moisturisers can be overcomplicated, so this INCI list is refreshingly short. Shop the ma:nyo – Our Vegan Heartleaf Cica Cream.
It can be especially difficult to find a moisturiser if you’re dealing with cystic or hormonal acne. As someone who hasn’t regularly experienced cystic acne, I have found that certainly some products can cause cystic acne. What this shows me is that cystic acne can be both hormonal (internally driven) and cosmetic (driven by external factors like products).
This means that making a change to your moisturiser (or whole skin-care routine) might improve your cystic acne. Other products that could be causing you cystic acne are:
The Best Korean Products For Oily Skin
Unlike cystic acne, hormonal acne can’t be caused by products. You can recognise hormonal acne by its signature appearance on the cheeks and chin. Sometimes the breakouts appear worse before your period, then clear up shortly after and the cycle begins again.
If you’re looking for a new moisturiser for hormonal acne, it’s helpful to recognise that diet and lifestyle changes might help you more. Lastly, if you’re wondering what sort of skincare might work well alongside these changes, here are the best skincare treatments for hormonal acne:
When it comes to acne-prone skin there is no ‘best’, it’s unfortunately just a lot of trial and error. If you’re worried about breaking out when trying a new moisturiser, consider patch testing it! Whether it's plain ol' pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, cystic acne or hormonal acne, it can be frustrating trying to figure out which product will work best for you. This is which we have rounded up this top 10 guide, covering all the products that we’d recommend for acne-prone skin in a heartbeat!
The 10 Best Korean Bb Creams Of 2024
Yes, it's time to chuck your drying lotions and benzoyl peroxide creams away! The COSRX Centella Blemish Cream is a fast-acting spot treatment cream featuring the gentle yet effective centella asiatica leaf water to normalise sebum production, calm problematic areas and and prevent further breakouts, all without drying out or irritating your skin even further.
Hydrating is so essential to help calm and make acne disappear faster, but you have to pick the right product for this. The Benton Aloe Propolis Soothing Gel contains aloe vera and propolis, two of our favourite ingredients to heal irritated or troubled skin. Their antibacterial and healing properties does wonders in soothing sensitised or inflamed skin, fading acne scars, brightening skin tone and to maintain the skin’s overall hydration level.
The COSRX AC Collection Acne Patch is a pimple patch unlike any other. The border of each hydrocolloid patch is purposely tapered to ensure that it will strongly and easily adhere onto any curved areas of the face, such as the
