Mahindra Korean Suv

Mahindra Korean Suv

It's no news that Mahindra and its South Korean subsidiary, SsangYong, have started to co-develop SUVs and engines. The XUV300, which is essentially a trimmed down SsangYong Tivoli with redesigned front and rear profiles is an example of the same. Likewise, the next-gen of XUV300’s bigger sibling, the XUV500, is expected to share its platform and styling along with other bits with the new SsangYong Korando.

The Korando is to Ssangyong what the XUV500 is to Mahindra - both are midsize SUVs in their respective portfolios. What's news, however, is that, SsangYong is all set to bring the 2020 fourth-gen Korando at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show next month. And it is safe to assume that the new SsangYong midsize SUV will preview the 2020 XUV500 in several ways.

First off, the new Korando and the second-gen XUV500 are expected to share a common platform. The new Korando is, in fact, expected to be based on the same platform as the Tivoli, albeit stretched. In other words, the next-gen XUV500 will be based on the stretched version of the XUV300 platform. It’s the only unibody platform that Mahindra will have going forward, apart from two other ladder-frame ones -- one on which the Marazzo is based and the other that underpins the Alturas G4. Mahindra will also share this platform with Ford as per their strategic tie-up.

Mahindra Vows More Investment

The second-gen XUV500 could also borrow the Korando’s styling as is the case with the XUV300 and the Tivoli. It is also likely to get a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine. Mahindra and SsangYong are already co-developing turbo petrol engines. The first of which is a 1.2-litre unit that will debut with the XUV300.

While the first-gen XUV500 was received well in the Indian car market, the second-gen might have to step up its game, given the ever increasing competition. Before the new XUV500 comes, there will be a host of launches in the midsize SUV space. Tata has already launched the Harrier at an aggressive price point and it will soon be joined by MG Hector as well. Both these SUVs will get a 7-seat option too.Next-gen Rexton to be badged Mahindra, unveil at Auto Expo 2018 - Report 11/01/2018 - 15:09 | Mahindra Rexton, Mahindra | Sagar Parikh

Last year, reports said that Mahindra will launch a Mahindra-badged version of the G4 SsangYong Rexton in India. According to a report from Autocar India, the Mahindra Rexton will debut at Auto Expo 2018 that opens Feb 7.

The Mahindra Rexton will have some changes from the G4 SsangYong Rexton at the front. Mahindra will likely change the SUV’s front grille to make it look like one of its original models, and maybe even change the interior trim to better suit the local market’s tastes. Apart from such minor cosmetic changes, the South Korean SUV is expected to remain as is.

The fourth-gen SsangYong Rexton (codename: SsangYong Y400) measures 4, 850 mm in length, 1, 960 mm in width and 1, 825 mm in height. It has a 2, 865 mm wheelbase. Under its hood, is the 2.2-litre e-XDi220 LET diesel engine, which is coupled to a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed automatic transmission. This engine produces 187 PS and 40.7 kg.m (400 Nm) of torque in the manual transmission model and 187 PS and 42.8 kg.m (420 Nm) of torque in the automatic transmission model. A part-time 4WD system is standard.

On the outside, the latest SsangYong Rexton features HID projector headlights with integrated daytime running lights, LED front fog & cornering lights, 20-inch alloy wheels, ORVMs with integrated turn signals and puddle lamps, LED rear combination lamps, Shark fin antenna, rear spoiler and rear fog lights. Interior highlights include 7-inch driver information display, 9.2-inch HD touchscreen infotainment system with satellite navigation, dual-zone automatic climate control and 8-way/6-way power adjustable and ventilated driver’s/front passenger seat.

360-degree camera, nine airbags, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Traffic Sign Recognition, Blind Spot Detection, Rear-cross Traffic Alert and Lane Departure Warning are the key safety and driver assistance features of the mid-size SUV. Most of them are unlikely to make it to the Mahindra-badged version, though.

The new SUV will compete with the likes of Isuzu MU-X, Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner. Reports suggest that its prices could start at somewhere around INR 24 lakh (ex-showroom). Its market launch could take place by the festive season this year.and 3rd parties use essential and non-essential cookies to provide, secure, analyze and improve our Services, and to show you relevant ads (including professional and job ads) on and off . Ssangyong's Turnaround Plan Canceled By Mahindra

Although it might still be some way off, the new SsangYong XAV SUV based on the Tivoli platform is likely to be of interest to anyone who is looking for a strong off-road model.

The all-new SUV follows on from the XAV concept, which made its debut at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. When the car goes into production, it is expected to boost the Korean carmaker’s product portfolio to seven models.

Senior executives at the firm had been debating whether to go ahead with production of the XAV ever since it was unveiled. It has now officially been given the green light, and development is currently underway.

The result is likely to be a stretched version of the Tivoli’s platform with styling based onthe no-frills Mk2 Korando, which was popular in the 1990s.

Chunky bumpers, skid plates, short overhangs and an elevated ride height are all expected to feature heavily as the firm intends to focus on the model's off-road capabilities.

The Tivoli platform base means that latest-generation diesel and petrol engines are likely to be used, even though the Frankfurt show concept car actually featured a type of hybrid electric E-4WD system.

Mahindra Pulls Funding From Ssangyong, Could Put Korean Challenger Brand's Future Plans On Hold

SsangYong has expressed an interest in introducing hybrids in the past, and this variant might still be a possibility for the new cars.

One feature that is less likely to be transferred from the concept car to the showroom is the company's 3S-CUBE system, which is designed to maximise its off-road ability. The electric air-suspension coupled with a special sensor automatically adjusts the ride height according to the terrain, but costs may be prohibitive for the full production of a premium SUV, especially when SsangYong’s value-for-money ethos is taken into account. The firm is also expected to debut a new Rexton SUV next year. It’s finally over for Mahindra & Mahindra and SsangYong Motor. With the Korean SUV maker now in the hands of a consortium led by Edison Motors, its 10-year innings with its Indian owner has officially come to an end.

M&M had already made it known a couple of years ago that it would cap investments in SsangYong since there was little coming by way of any return. While losses were piling up, sales were nothing to write home about. The only way out was to find a suitor and exit, which is precisely what has happened now with Edison Motors.

From M&M’s point of view, the future is now about focusing on its core strengths of SUVs which, ironically, was the reason why it chose to call it a day with Ford over two decades ago. This was the time it made the important decision of focusing on Project Scorpio instead of pumping in money into a joint venture where it had little to contribute in the car space.

Mahindra's

Scorpio, of course, turned out to be a resounding success story and a bolder M&M emerged in the process, which was now keen on spreading its wings into the mobility space. It threw its hat into a host of new areas, like two-wheelers (buying out Kinetic’s business), trucks (through an alliance with Navistar of the US) and a comeback in cars by way of a joint venture with Renault to manufacture the Logan.

Yet, SsangYong was special because it marked an extension of its core business of SUVs and the fact that this was following a buyout of a global company made it even more attractive. Tata Motors had already done this twice with Daewoo Commercial Vehicles and a more glamorous buyout of Jaguar Land Rover from Ford.

Mahindra & Mahindra Arm Ssangyong Motor Files For Bankruptcy

Both Tata Motors and M&M represented legacy Indian companies which had braved the MNC onslaught and still managed to carve a niche for themselves – the former with its Indica and the latter with the Scorpio. This was happening at a time when two other Indian brands, Hindustan Motors and Premier Automobiles, had been relegated to the sidelines. There were, hence, a lot of hopes when M&M announced its acquisition of SsangYong way back in 2010-’11.

The company was clearly on a roll and upbeat about the prospects with its new Korean acquisition which had been through its share of upheavals with previous owners like Daewoo and China’s SAIC Motor Corp. It was admittedly a small player in South Korea compared to giants like Hyundai and Kia, but this reality did not deter M&M which
