W Korean Drama Total Episodes

Became: watching Korean dramas. I did not expect this since I was more of reader than a watcher. I became an avid fan of KDramas before but only during the time of Boys Over Flowers and The Heirs. Thankfully, the hype came back when DOTS and Cheese and the Trap were aired and basically, almost everyone in school were watching them. I definitely joined the bandwagon and became both a DOTS and a Cheese in the Trap fan. After those two, I tried watching other dramas and I came cross with The Healer, a 2014-2015 action-romance which literally stole my heart. Sadly, after finishing 20 episodes of it, I felt the need to watch more — dramas that have immensely good plots.

To be honest, I only knew about ‘W’ by accident. I was scrolling through my facebook feed when I saw this post about KDramas worth watching: Doctors, Oh My Ghost, Uncontrollably Fond and W. I was able to watch the first episode of Doctors, several episodes of Uncontrollably Fond and less than five minutes of the first episode of Oh My Ghost because I got really scared (legit). However, when I started watching ‘W’, I couldn’t even pause. I instantly became too attached to the character, as if I was Yeon Joo (the female lead). It was probably because ever since, I have dreamt of being a medical doctor.

To be honest, I was a bit shocked with the fast track of events during the first episode especially with the life of Kang Chul (the male lead played by Lee Jong Suk). Even more surprised when I discovered that his life is taken from a webtoon, and that he himself is a webtoon character. From that moment, I knew, this was the kind of KDrama that I was looking for: suspense-romance, just like Cheese in the Trap, but this time,

Kang Chul and Yeon Joo lived in different worlds in the KDrama, and the name of the webtoon where Kang Chul is a character was actually ‘W’.

In the first episode, Kang Chul was introduced as a well-known gunslinger athlete who joined the Olympics and won. However, after winning, he faced a sudden mishap when his whole family was shot dead by an unknown killer. When he and the rest of Korea found out about the incident, he became a suspect for the death of his own family. People believed that he was guilty of the crime. He was detained for several years in prison until one day, he was proven innocent (although there were still people who thought otherwise). Persitent and determined to discover the real criminal for justice, Kang Chul made himself wealthy and powerful in the society, thereby becoming a CEO of a company which seeks to fight for justice. Kang Chul became a defender of justice and a hero whose primary aim was to seek justice for his beloved loved ones. Until one day, someone had an intention to take Kang Chul’s life away, leaving him almost breathless on a building’s rooftop.

Yeon Joo, on the other hand, was introduced as a doctor who was an amateur in the med field. She was not given much opportunity to perform her role as a doctor since most people believed she could not handle extreme situations. Yeon Joo’s father was the creator of the webtoon ‘W’, and it became an advantage since her boss was an avid fan of such.

As the KDrama story went on, Yeon Joo discovered that his father was missing and when she visited his office, she caught sight of monitor projecting the ‘W’ webtoon on its screen. Surprisingly, a bleeding hand came out the screen and hastily took her in. The scene and the atmosphere changed — Yeon Joo was inside the webtoon and she was facing the badly injured Kang Chul. Kang Chul begged her to save him and even though she seemed unsure of what she was doing, she saved his life by stabbing him with a pen (insert medical reasons how could such act save a person).

‘ sign appears, she gets back to her real world and it was only on the latter episodes that she found out about it. In the webtoon, she was having an identity crisis since no records of her nor of the hospital she was working at were available.

When Yeon Joo told Park Bong (his father’s assistant) her father about her being taken inside the webtoon, her father’s attitude changed. Yeon Joo also discovered that time in the real world was diffirent to that of the webtoon — faster for the latter and usually, Yeon Joo was gone for only 30 minutes in real world time.

Yeon Joo’s father he believed that he created a monster because all of a sudden he could no longer control what he draws or creates. The webtoon was starting to create a story of its own and it happened to be in accordance to how the character acted which was contradictory to how it should have gone in the first place. It all started when Yeon Joo’s father first attempted to kill Kang Chul by drawing a picture of him jumping and eventually drowning in the Han River. Unfortunately, after several hours, the story that he drew changed — Kang Chul managed to get ahold of one of the bridge’s handrails and survived, leaving Yeon Joo’s father shocked and troubled. When Kang Chul was saved for the second time, especially by his daughter, it suddenly appeared in the webtoon he was creating — like the comics type to be read by the real world people. Yeon Joo’s name, face, and her actions were there, vividly described. Readers of the webtoon were shocked at the sudden change of plot.

Yeon Joo’s father decided to kill Kang Chul once again, and this time, by drawing a nurse to be sent to Kang Chul’s room and to inject him with poison. Yeon Joo heard about the plan from Park Bong and decided to save Kang Chul again especially when she found out that his father’s main character seemed

Yeon Joo managed to get back inside of the webtoon and rushed to Kang Chul’s room, preventing the nurse’s attempt to kill the man. Kang Chul was shocked at her sudden appearance since in the webtoon, the police, after the incident, began searching for her as a possible suspect for stabbing Kang Chul.

Kang Chul tried interviewing Yeon Joo but she was hesitant to tell the truth of why she kept showing up when Kang Chul was in danger. She couldn’t tell him because the truth may appear in the webtoon’s version in the real world, and also, she couldn’t just tell him that he was a cartoon character because that would sound ridiculous.

Yeon Joo made excuses and promised to tell Kang Chul the truth once they meet again and when she left the hospital, Kang Chul started seeing Yeon Joo as the ‘Key to his life’ which was the absolutely cutest line I’ve ever heard from a Korean drama.

Kdrama:

Fast forward to the time they met again (2 months after in ‘W’ webtoon world), Kang Chul managed to feel better after the incident and he decided to take Yeon Joo out. Both of them traveled to a fashion boutique to get dressed and while looking ravishing on a black laced dress, Yeon Joo was thinking of a way to get back to her world. She realized that in order for episodes to end, something

Must happen. With that, she had chosen to slap Kang Chul when she met him outside of the dressing room. Unfortunately, it did not work, so after the embarrassing slap that made my jaw drop, she kissed him and then she vanished and returned back to her world. This slap-kiss scene was ridiculuously good! I never expected that to happen.

The coming episodes were a lot more interesting. Yeon Joo’s father planned to Kang Chul again through a car accident but Kang Chul managed to save himself without the help of Yeon Joo due to his determination to live. As a huge truck approached his way while he was driving, he took a detour and all of a sudden, everything around him stopped moving (

). Yeon Joo and Kang Chul met again. Kang Chul let the unconscious Yeon Joo stay in his penthouse style hotel room. Yeon Joo started blabbering about the information she knew about Kang Chul (which she found out as her father was writing the plot) which left him quite surprised. The moment the unconscious Yeon Joo woke up, she did another set of crazy things in order for her to get back to her world: first, showing herself in brasseine in front of Kang Chul, and second, saying ‘saranghaeyo’ to Kang Chul even if she did not mean it. She was only left embarrassed, and I was laughing
