Young Hee Kho, who also goes by the name Joy, brings a bit of her home to the new restaurant her family has in Weston Town Center.
Yum Korea had a soft opening in November with plans for a grand opening sometime in January. The eatery has both counter and table service in what the owners describe as “a casual vibe.”
But in the kitchen, it is strictly all about the matriarch’s recipes, many of which she brought with her when she and husband Tae Your Kho immigrated to the United States in January 1991.

“I cook everything in the kitchen fresh for you, ” Kho says. “They are all my recipes — very fresh and home-style everything. I’m teaching my employees to do it my way.”
Her daughter Eunice Kho adds, “She creates everything, even the marinades, the sauces. She doesn’t skimp out on anything. I’ve seen it for the last 25 years of my life and I have no idea. I do not understand all the minuscule details that go into it.”

After settling in South Florida, the Khos went into the women’s apparel import/export business. But the Great Recession devastated their markets in 2008.
So Young Hee, who loved throwing dinner parties and regaling guests with dishes and the stories behind them, decided to turn those skills toward opening a restaurant. Ten years ago the Khos opened Manna Korean BBQ Restaurant in Lauderhill.
“They never worked for other people, ” recalls Eunice. “And they had three kids. I was in high school at the time and we’re all four years apart. I don’t know how they did it. It was hard in the beginning.”

The family has lived in Weston for 20 years, so that was part of the draw, but the other part was the specific place.
“Weston Town Center is very popular, ” Young Hee says. “We looked at a lot of different locations. My life is more comfortable in Weston.”

“She picked out everything, ” Eunice explains. “It’s light gray, very modern with rustic benches made of wood, wood tables with pops of orange. It’s warm colors and a dash of color. She’s very adamant about one pop of color, but not being bright or tacky. She has great taste. Growing up I always went into her closet for things to wear.”
