Good start but this phrase is a bit hard right? lol I’m sorry to make you suffer from the start. 새해 is new year, 복 is good luck or good fortune, 많이 is many or much, 받으세요 is receive in a speech tone to suggest / recommend someone to do. So, it’s a wish for someone’s good luck for new year. Very sweet phrase right? All native Koreans say it to everyone they know at New Year’s. That’s a Korean custom.

So, all together : I wish your many good fortunes (or good things) in new year. When you response to this phrase, it’s better to say it exactly same to another rather than only saying ‘you too’
Koreans often add 덕담(deokdam) which means a word of blessing in Korean with all wishes for friends and family’s happiness. Mostly they wish everything goes well in new year. How sweet is that?
If you read Korean Jun’s How To Say Korean Series in order, then you have must seen that you can say ‘즐거운 … 되세요’. You can use that phrase with New Year too but with ‘행복(happiness)’ instead. However, ‘새해 복 많이 받아’ is much more common because that’s a Korean custom.

Hey everyone! Hope everyone had an awesome Christmas holiday with your family and friends. We had a pretty good holiday here. Being the introverted couple we are, we decided to chill at home, cook, watch movies, and drink some eggnog (made it myself, and it turned out great). I’m on vacation for a month, but sadly Hyo still has to work. However, with so much time off, expect more posts from now until late January as I will have more energy to do more work.

You would use this towards kids or very close friends and family. However, it’s still very rare to use this and the polite version is still the best one to use.
Keep in mind that Koreans celebrate two new years. One for the changing of the Gregorian calendar year, and one for the lunar new year. You can use these greetings for both.

Celebrating The Lunar New Year Away From Home
Before we get into the Korean vocabulary, here are a few important things to go over related to New Year’s in Korea. Firstly, Korea has two New Year celebrations.
On January 1st, there is the celebration of the Solar New Year, 신정 (sinjeong). That is the celebration covered in this article.
During the Solar New Year, people often spend time with their friends. In Central Seoul, on New Year’s Eve, many people gather to hear the ringing of the bell in 종로 (Jongno) on the stroke of midnight.
How To Say Happy New Year In Korean
The second New Year celebration celebrated in Korea is known as Lunar New Year or 구정 (gujeong). This is held in late January or early February. Koreans celebrate it by having a large holiday known as 설날 (seollal). During Seollal, people usually visit their hometown, eat 떡국 (tteokguk) with their families, and visit their ancestors’ graves.
There are different ways to say “Happy New Year” in Korean, depending on who you speak Korean with. We’ll explain how to use each of them below.

This phrase is often used in formal situations, greeting cards, and when speaking to people, you want to show lots of respect. The 십시오 (sipsio) ending is the extra-formal way of saying -세요 (seyo).
In Korean. 새해 (saehae) is one of the words that means “new year, ” 복 (bok) means “luck, ” and 많이 (mani) means “many” or “lots of.” 받으세요 (badeuseyo) is the honorific way of saying 받다 (batda), meaning “to receive.”
This Korean expression is an alternative to 새해 복 많이 받으세요 (saehae bok mani badeuseyo) and still means “Happy New Year.” Use them both if you want to get extra practice!

Typically, most people wouldn’t use the informal version of this phrase. However, the informal phrase is ok to say between close friends and family.
The concept of making resolutions is less common in Korea than it is in other countries. However, if you want to tell people your New Year’s resolution, then you can end your sentence with -기로 했어요 (giro haesseoyo). This ending means “I plan to.” Look at the examples below to see how it is used:
