HKUST Global Business (GBUS) Program has been offering unique and diverse international exposure for students through overseas study trips. The first study trip after the pandemic set foot in Seoul, South Korea, with 18 students exploring Korean business and history, making connections with our university partner and students, and gaining cultural exposure.

Middle: They spent time at the Bank of Korea to learn about the history of Korea’s money and economy, and the greater value behind the banknote.

Right: With first-hand experience of the leading ICT media technology, students got to delve into 2053 to see the possibilities of advanced technologies in energy facilities, urban agriculture, and healthcare to construct the future city at SK Telecom.

Left: One of the highlights of the trip was a visit to our Korean alumnus, LEE Jaeook (Class of 2018). He has recently been selected as the honoree of the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia 2023. Co-founded Sooldamhwa (술담화) – a Korean traditional alcohol (KTA) start-up leveraging an online platform to provide data-backed alcohol curation and tailor-made services, Jaeook shared that his undergraduate experience at GBUS supported his ideas and aspirations as an entrepreneur.

Right: The students also visited the Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) Global Business Administration (GBA) program for lectures on communication and networking by Prof. Joseph KIM, and the evolution of Web 3.0 by Prof. KIM Yongsuk; followed by a fun networking dinner to mingle with the SKKU GBA students.

Students also navigated several Korean culture and history spots: Amore Pacific Art Museum, the Han River, HiKR Ground, the Gyeongbokgung Palace, Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), the 38th parallel north, and the Korean Peninsula.

The study trip inspired our students to “create impacts with a global and strategic mindset” with a vision to think from different perspectives and make use of creativity and innovation to be the changemaker in creating a better world.
