Something In The Rain: Season 1

Egg Film, the production company behind the 2003 film The Classic filed an injunction at Seoul District Court against Yoon's Color for copyright infringemt on June 6, 2012. In it, the motion sought to ban any future broadcast of Love Rain and any subsequt production and sales of the drama and its related products. Egg Film claimed that the TV series' plot and characters were too similar to the film, specifically the themes of a couple breaking up because one chose fridship over love, and years later their childr falling in love with one another.

Yoon's Color disputed the claims, stating that the themes were common to the melodrama gre, since several sces of The Classic were also similar to Yoon Seok-ho's earlier TV dramas. They accused Egg Film of trying to jump on the bandwagon giv the overseas success of Love Rain.

Love Rain was re-edited into a two-part film which screed in Japanese theaters. The first part, composed mainly of sces set in the 1970s, was released on September 20, 2013, while the second part, which focuses on the prest day, was released on October 11, 2013.One.  Two.  Three.  That’s how long it took for me to make a snap judgment about the new Jang Geun Suk and Yoon Ah youth/campus/pure love drama airing on KBS America right now.  I suppose I should give this pure love story, set alternately in the 70s and the present day, more of a chance, but if three seconds is enough for true love, why can’t it be for dramas?  I’m not going to think about how weird and potentially creepy it’s going be when there’s the time leap with the same actors playing the children of the current crop of characters – I’ll focus on the creepiness of the present episode first.

First episodes tend to be weak, but at least this one looked pretty with the fancier (for a Korean drama) filming and muted color scheme.  The drama starts out abruptly – we skip over the typical meet cute and hear college student Seo In Ha (Jang Geun Suk) tell us in a voiceover how he fell in love with a beautiful girl with long hair, Kim Yun Hui (Yoon Ah), in three seconds.  She’s his three-second soulmate!  And so begins what is supposed to be a devastatingly romantic and beautiful love story, but which I found to be kind of frustrating and on the creepy side.  But that had more to do with Jang Geun Suk than the story.

Seo In Ha is a dreamy art student, who is also a prince-type on campus because his family owns most of the land in the town where he’s from (I guess the 70s were too early for the chaebol style of wealth I’ve grown accustomed to).  He is cold to most women and generally doesn’t take an interest in them, until he sees Kim Yun Hui, a second year in the Home Ec department.  From the moment he sees her, you’d think he had grown up stalking girls judging by the readiness with which he takes to secretly watching her from windows as she rubs saliva on her leg, painting her in those frenzied bouts of inspiration that are common to both lovers and psychopaths (see

I wish I was making this stuff up – it’s so not ok to read another person’s diary.  I know that there’s the tradition of exchanging diaries, but that’s supposed to be after a declaration of some sort.  Maybe things were different in the 70s, especially in this crazy Korea which the drama just briefly hints at (such as the policemen measuring miniskirts or the loudspeakers summoning students to say the pledge).

Kim Yun Hui is known as the Madonna of Home Ec – if this had been set in the 80s she would have been a very different character, I think.  But in the 70s it means she is the epitome of good girl and hyper femininity.  She is considered the prettiest girl on campus and she has boys literally throwing themselves at her feet.  They’re probably responding to the secret sadness in her life (catnip) – her parents died when she was young.  We learn a lot about her through In Ha’s inappropriate perusal of her diary, so maybe that was more a sloppy plot device than an indication that he’s kind of a freak.

She and In Ha keep running into each other, often literally since he’s kind of a bumbling fool, and soon all of those run-ins develop into a pure love.  But it’s the first episode and we can’t have them falling in love too easily.

Like in almost every other drama ever, there are the loud and aggressive second leads.  We haven’t seen much of the trashy girl, Baek Hye Jung (Son Eun Seo), yet, and all we know is that she seems to have some money, she is jealous of Yun Hui, and she likes In Ha.  What more do we need to know?  The wonderfully named second guy, Lee Dong Wook (Kim Si Hoo),  had a little more to do, which was both good and bad.  Good because I like the actor and his character way more than In Ha’s, but bad because he throws into greater relief how much Jang Geun Suk and Seo In Ha are lacking.  It’s always hard rooting for the second lead in a drama.
