OCN’s “Life on Mars” has been gaining attention for its ability to maintain the feeling of the original BBC program while also creating a drama that Koreans can relate to.
The BBC original has been remade in various countries such as the United States, Spain, Russia, and the Czech Republic. David Belshaw, a BBC foreign drama format producer, has praised the Korean remake, saying, “The Korean ‘Life on Mars’ has the essence of the original while also having its own local flair. The setting is very Korean, and the time period is also interesting to watch.”
One of the most difficult challenges of remaking a foreign drama is the separation between the different emotions of the two countries. It’s important that the remake keep some of the original color while also having an emotional exchange with viewers.

Thanks to his direction, the drama was able to be reborn as an investigative drama that is Korean to its core while also keeping the feel of the original. This is why not only fans of the original, but viewers who hadn’t seen the drama before are able to enjoy the drama.

Tae Joo, a detective with principles, is asked for a favour by his ex-girlfriend, who is a prosecutor. While pursuing a man suspected to be a serial killer, he loses consciousness after getting hit by a car. When he wakes up, he finds himself in the year 1988.

Fugitives are on the run and have taken a family hostage in their home. Officers of the Seobu Police Department are the first to arrive including Han Tae Joo who makes it his mission to keep everyone alive. Captain Kang Dong Cheol is outraged by this, and he seeks to find out answers only to find himself in trouble. Meanwhile, Han Tae Joo receives a call that might help him find his way back home.
Captain Kang Dong Cheol is a suspect in the death of Officer Shin and Chief Kim Gyeong Se. As a fugitive, he can only rely on Han Tae Joo to prove his innocence. Despite the evidence all pointing to Captain Kang, Han Tae Joo still tries to help him. Meanwhile, Chief Ahn Min Sik is determined to arrest Captain Kang Dong Cheol and won't let off one bit.
