I remember when my skincare routine consisted of a bar of soap. I did not have the patience or the desire to do a step-by-step routine on my face. Some nights I could barely muster up the energy to take a make-up wipe to my face. Basically when it came to skincare, I was lazy af.
Well, fast forward a few years — I’m now into my thirties and skincare has taken a front seat on my priorities list. I have been doing all the things to make sure my skin stays fresh, healthy and glowing. Granted, getting botox also helped, but still. Your skin stays with you for your lifetime; you better be taking care of it!
So first, it’s important to know the order in which products should be applied. What helped me the most with this, is to remember

. For example, you will apply an oil before a cream. I’ve also made a little graphic for you below. Feel free to save it, print it, pin it, whatever you need to help you remember.
Second, the product ingredients matter. You want to be using products that are good for your health, and for your skin type. Did you know there are only 11 ingredients banned from products in the United States? ELEVEN. Know how many the United Kingdom has banned? 1, 300. I’ll say it again, there are one thousand three hundred ingredients that the United Kingdom has deemed harmful and therefore banned them from products on the market. Makes you wonder what you’re putting on your skin doesn’t it?
This step removes all the dirt, makeup and impurities on your skin. I’ll be honest, sometimes I even use a make-up wipe even though I know they aren’t that great for your skin. I use Billie Wonder Wipes because they contain Vitamin C. Otherwise, I hop in the shower (I absolutely hate washing my face in the sink) and use an oil cleanser.
My Korean Skincare Routine
You always want to start with clean skin, so I wash my face twice. The reason behind double cleansing is the first wash removes makeup, dirt and grim, while the second wash really washes your actual skin. I’ve been doing this for a few months now and really starting to notice a difference.
Some exfoliators are too harsh to use every day but it’s always important to exfoliate your skin. An exfoliant removes dead skin cells and buffs away dull skin; it leaves you with a more radiant soft skin. I rotate between a sugar scrub, for everyday use, and an exfoliating mask, used once or twice a week.
Next, apply a toner. This removes any dead skin cells and excess dirt and oil from your skin. It also removes impurities and diminishes the appearance of pores after cleansing. Usually applied with a cotton pad.

If you' aren’t using an essence I highly recommend it. I found this through Monat and did a bunch of research on it because I had never heard of it before! It’s prevalent in Korean skincare routines (and they have the best skin). Basically an essence acts as a primer for your skin and makes the ingredients in the rest of your routine much more effective.
Serums contain topical antioxidants (like vitamin A, C and E) that help to even out your skin tone. A serum acts as a targeted treatment for wrinkles, redness and pigmentation.
Eye creams are great for blurring the appearance of lines, wrinkles and dark circles. It can also help reduce the look of puffiness in the eye area.
Multiple Skincare Steps: Neither Vanity Nor Virtue
You skin needs lots of moisture; especially if it’s dry like mine. A moisturizer can help firm skin and improve the look of fine lines and wrinkles. It also locks in moisture for deep hydration and nourishment.
Adding oil to your routine just adds another layer of moisture. An oil re-hydrates and revitalizes dry skin or any skin in need of replenishment and deep renewal.
Always wear sunscreen! Even when it’s not sunny out. Minerals zinc oxide and titanium dioxide offer UVA/UVB protection that physically shields the skin from harmful rays. Sunscreens are now including protection against blue light — which is a must for both indoors and outdoors!
A Beginner's Nighttime Skincare Routine: Korean Skincare
Retinol is also known as Vitamin A and can improve skin texture, pigmentation, and tone. The one I use also helps to reduce the appearance of age spots, and targets the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
I recently added this to my routine as well. It’s basically an instant eye lift in a bottle. It tightens the skin for a more even, no wrinkle look.
This one is new for me as of a couple weeks ago and I absolutely love it. Your lips definitely deserve some extra love at night.
I Swapped My 10 Step Korean Skincare Routine For A 3 Step One To See If I Could Get The Same Results
I’m the one my friends always call while standing in front of their closet trying to figure out what to wear. I have always had a passion for style and love being a go-to resource for people looking for advice. Whether you need help with what to wear or how to set a table for dinner, I'm your girl. I share all things about life, modern day etiquette and casual everyday style. I’ve been thinking of creating a skincare routine for a while but kept procrastinating. I researched online and each time i searched articles and reviews, about 5 – 7 out of 10 results were on Korean skin care routine, so i became more interested in it and searched for all i could find on the routine. After reading lots of reviews, i jumped on the Korean skin care bandwagon. Though the reviews were generally positive, I still have to find the right products for my skin.
You don’t have to use Korean skincare products for the routine, if you already have products that are working for you, all you need to do is to add them to the routine provided you follow the same steps of a Korean skin care routine. For me, i started with only Korean skin care products because at the moment i don’t have a particular product i’m using and the ones i used in the past, only worked for a short time.
Since the weather is getting colder and it’s becoming really difficult to take outfit photos, i will be posting about my routine results and doing reviews of some of this products in addition to my outfit posts. The routine is generally seen as a 10-step process but the number of steps really depends on skin problems targeted , it could be more than 10. The Korean women believe in investing time and money to achieve flawless skin, if you must spend time and money trying to look good with fashion and makeup, you should spend the same caring for your skin. Do you agree with this?
An Introduction To Korean Skincare With A 3 Step Routine *
1. Pre-Cleanse: This is the first step of the popular “double cleanse” method to remove all make up and impurities. I use Innisfree Olive Real Cleansing Tissue to clean makeup and after that i use The Face Shop Rice Water Bright Cleansing Light Oil and warm water to remove impurities. They believe oil melts away makeup and draws out bacteria, sebum and removes impurities without drying the skin.
2. Cleanse: the second part of the double cleanse method. I got a free sample of Etude House Ac Clinic Acne Foam Cleanser, so i started with it because i had a fresh pimple when i received my package. Majority of the reviews said it over-dried the face so i didn’t want to get a full-size yet. it dried the pimple within 12 hours though but i can’t give a complete review yet. The other foam cleanser is Skinfood Aloe Vera Foaming Cleanser. Wash off and continue…
3. Exfoliate: This isn’t done every day so you can skip when not needed. You can use the gel or powder versions up to 3 times per week or the gritty versions made of sugar etc, It’s advisable to exfoliate with the gritty types 1-2 times a month to avoid skin irritation. I’m currently using Skinfood Black Sugar Mask Wash Off (gritty). I’ve only used it once but i’m already loving the results!

4. Tone/Refresh: Toners are called Refreshers/Freshners in Korea. These refreshers are different from the popular alcohol-full toners found in other parts of the world. It’s believed to remove any residual product from the previous steps and balances your skin’s pH while prepping your skin to better absorb the remaining products to be used. I use Etude House Wonder Pore Freshner.
5. Essence: To the Korean women. this is the next most important step after double-cleansing. It nourishes and enhances skin’s cellular renewal rate making the skin smoother and brighter and increases elasticity and firmness too. I’m currently using Laneige Original Essence White Plus Renew (part of a trial kit) while waiting to receive my Benton Snail Bee High Content Essence.
6. Ampoule: I don’t have one yet, so i skip this step. Ampoules are highly-concentrated versions of essence targeted at specific skin problems; anti-ageing, wrinkling, uneven tone, etc
