All drivers must possess a physical Korean Driver's Licse card or an International Driving Permit. It is possible to acquire a Korean driver's licse by also demonstrating legal residcy and sitting for a (Korean / glish) rules of the road examination. However, legal infractions are punishable and can be giv wh a driver fails to produce their driver's licse and refuses to allow a police officer to idtify themselves.The other day I wrote about the requirements for getting a Korean driver's license, one of which is taking a 20-question computerized test. On Monday afternoon, after 22 months of living (and driving...oops!) in Korea I finally I rode my scooter out to the Driver's License Agency office in Pohang.
The test was easy enough; though the time limit is 30 minutes, it didn't take me more than 10. I passed with a score of 80% (the passing mark is 60%, or 12 questions).

The hardest thing about the test was trying to interpret the English wording of each question. It had been translated quite confusingly from Korean, and at times it was hard to tell what the sentence was trying to convey - not unlike trying to decipher the food options on your average Korean menu.
Most of the questions consisted of a picture with 5 or 6 multiple choice options. I was instructed to choose the 2 best answers based, usually, on driving safely and what to watch out for in the accompanying scenario.
In this scenario, which are the safest ways to proceed? (Choose 2) Speed up to pass the pedestrian before she crosses the road. Be alert for parked cars backing out into the road. Honk your horn to make the pedestrian walk faster. Reduce your speed to give the pedestrian time to cross. Stop your car in the middle of the road and look for any other pedestrians or parked cars.

Another question was an animation of a car driving down a road, switching lanes, and turning left at a traffic light. Other cars would move around in the simulations and pedestrians would cross in front of you. The question asked me to identify the two most dangerous situations in the animation.
Though most were common sense, on a couple of questions I had to guess completely, since they covered things like fines or administrative stuff. I don't know how I scored on them - the test never gave me a breakdown of my results.

Korean Diary. A Driver's License Can Be Obtained In A Day, But
The hardest part of the whole day was actually FINDING the Driver's License Agency office. What should have been a simple 30-minute trip turned into 2 hours. The map that the agency provided on their website was mind-numbingly terrible. At one point I stopped at a government office to ask for directions. A helpful employee looked at the map quizzically for a few minutes, crossed it off, then turned the paper over and hand-drew his own map on the back that turned out to be impressively accurate.
If you're trying to find your own local DLA branch office, I suggest more reliable sources (Google maps, Daum maps, any bum on the street) for directions to get to your particular testing center.There are more than few accounts of how to go about acquiring a driving license in Korea- here’s adding my experience in 2020.
There are other options if you choose to drive here including using an IDP you brought with you from your home country, exchanging your license (if your country is acknowledged) or the last option which is to start from scratch.
Finally A Licensed Driver, On The 960th Try
I’ll focus on the last bit because that’s what I did. I didn’t have the chance to go home and get my IDP renewed so I found myself without a license this year. Simply unacceptable considering that I am physically incapable of sitting still and need the freedom to move around on my own.
In order to qualify to apply for a Korean driver’s license, you must have an Alien Registration Card (ARC) so short term visitors are not eligible. You will also need passport sized photos for the application. You can have the pictures taken at the centre itself and they’ll even nicely edit out your blemishes in the 30 seconds between taking the photo and printing.
There are three parts to the process (I know there are posts and videos floating around of people getting through all the requirements in a single day but that was simply impossible for me because 1) There is only one DMV in Daejeon 2) It’s a proper city with a big population 3) We’d just come down from COVID-19 distancing policies so lots of students were free to take their tests now.) 4) You must wait at least three days between the functions and on-road test.
It Took Me 960 Tries To Get My License — And Cost Me $4,200
At the location I went to there were no English interpreters but I found you can go pretty far if you can speak a little bit of Korean and gesture well enough. It’s a straightforward process and the most communicating you’d need to do is to understand where to go for each of the steps and how to schedule test days.
Before you start taking the tests, the first hurdle you’ll have to overcome is filling out the application form. There are two types you can apply for: Type 1 and Type 2. To be honest, I’m still looking for the difference but it might be that Type 1 is for manual transmission vehicles and Type 2 for automatic transmission. Within the two types you then choose which vehicle class you’re applying for, either 1종보통 or 2종보통 for regular sized cars.
Now, there are exam exceptions so if you already have a valid licence from a country that is recognised by Korea, you would be eligible to opt-out of certain exams. Turns out, I didn’t technically need to do the Health Check or Written Test and could have saved myself some money and time, but no one had told me at the time about these exceptions. Also the onus is on you to inform the people at the counter of the DMV when you’re booking your tests. They’ll assume you have no prior experience and/or are getting your license from scratch for the first time.
How To Get A Korean Driver's License
The written test will consist of 40 questions pulled from a bank. You will do it on the computer at the DMV. The test is a combination of technical questions, signs, common sense, demerits, and driving laws. There are apps available on the Google Play Store and Apple Store to help with these questions (just type in some combination of korea + driving + test + written). You’ll need a minimum of 60/100 points for Type 2 or 70/100 for Type 1 to pass. The test is available in English. Just a blanket note, all parts of the driving test are available in English.
Before you take the test, you will need to have signed up to watch a 1 hour safety video that is played at specific times so please ask your local DMV or look up their schedule online.
This bit was the bane of my existence. I had to take this test thrice so please learn from my mistakes and go in prepared. Even after scouring the internet for all the information and watching countless videos, I still failed because of a couple reasons: 1) I cannot reverse park for the life of me and 2) I’m easily excited by the sight of a finish line and
